They have moved the world since their discovery. People have fought wars and traveled to foreign continents so that they could call spices their own. Spices were believed to have healing, magical and aphrodisiac powers.

Cloves

The first clove tree grew on the volcanic flanks of the island of Maluku. It has a blue-gray bark and large leaves. Initially, the first buds form on it with long ovaries and four red sepals. These buds are picked before the flowers open. After they are harvested and are dried. Cloves need to see the sea in order to grow.

nutmeg

Nutmeg doesn't have to see the sea like cloves, but it does have to smell it. It grows in the tropical rainforest of the volcanic Banda Islands. The trees have dark green, oval leaves and small, yellow flowers. Only the female trees develop dark yellow, apricot-like fruits. When the fruits ripen, they burst open and the dark red seed coat appears. Underneath lies the hard nutmeg, which is therefore not a nut but a kernel.

Cinnamon

Real cinnamon (Cinnamommum Verum) originally comes from Sri Lanka. Behind the outer bark of the tree lies a paper-thin, fragrant, yellowish-brown layer with a sweet, woody scent and strong taste. This bark is scraped off and can be ground into powder.

Cardamom

In southwest India, the Sahyadri mountain range arose when the continent broke away from Africa and Australia 150 million years ago. This mountain range traps the rain that comes with the southwest monsoon, resulting in a humid climate. Cardamom (Elettaria Cardamommum) grows here along with other spices. The leaves of the plant are four meters long. They are dark green on the upper side and light green on the underside. The inflorescence of this plant produces capsule-shaped, very aromatic seeds, the aromatic cardamom.

Pepper

Black pepper (Piper nigrum) also grows on the same mountain slopes as cardamom. The chain plant with its heart-shaped leaves can grow up to four meters tall. Its berries are the known peppercorns. When ripe, they are white and lie behind a dark red shell. At some point, people discovered that they had to be picked green and unripe, cooked and dried so that they become black and aromatic.

Vanilla

Vanilla is made from the fermented capsules of various species of the Vanilla orchid genus. The queen of spices was known in Mexico long before the arrival of the Europeans. For a long time, the Totonacs were the only people who knew about its cultivation. The capsules on the vanilla plants are grown in plantations and harvested shortly before they are ripe. They are turned into this aromatic spice through a process called browning.

Mahlab

This spice is the germ from the stone of the rock cherry. The sweet and sour, nutty spice is used as a baking ingredient, especially in the Eastern World.
